What Is Medicaid?
Medicaid is a health insurance program for people with low income. It is run by both the federal government and each state. In Kentucky, Medicaid pays for doctor visits, hospital stays, medicine, and more.
You do not pay monthly premiums for most Medicaid plans. Some people pay small copays for certain services.
Who Qualifies for Medicaid in Kentucky 2026?
Kentucky Medicaid covers several groups of people. Each group has its own income rule. Your age, health, and family situation decide which group you fall into.
Adults Ages 19–64
Adults without a disability may qualify through Kentucky’s ACA expansion. This is called MAGI Medicaid, based on Modified Adjusted Gross Income.
Children, Pregnant Women, and Infants
Children and pregnant women have higher income limits than adults. Some children qualify for KCHIP if their family earns too much for regular Medicaid.
Seniors, Blind, and Disabled Individuals
People who are 65 or older, blind, or disabled may qualify through a different set of rules. This group is called non-MAGI Medicaid and includes long-term care.
| Group | Ages | Income Rule Type |
|---|---|---|
| Adults | 19–64 | MAGI (138% FPL) |
| Children | 1–18 | MAGI (147% FPL) |
| Infants | 0–1 | MAGI (200% FPL) |
| Pregnant Women | Any | MAGI (200% FPL) |
| KCHIP Children | 1–18 | MAGI (218% FPL) |
| Aged/Blind/Disabled | 65+ or disabled | Non-MAGI |
| Nursing Home/Waiver | 65+ or disabled | Non-MAGI (income cap) |
